LAST TIME OUT
Both teams would exchange baskets with one another to begin the game, with the score 6-4 in favor of the Ichabods, they would end the opening quarter on a 8-2 run to take a 14-6 lead going into the second quarter. In the second quarter, the Jets would be able to tie the game up at 22 before Washburn would end the quarter on a 6-0 run to lead 28-22 going into the intermission. In the third quarter, Washburn would take control and break away from the Jets outscoring Newman 23-11 in the quarter and taking an 18 point lead, 51-33 going into the final quarter. In the fourth quarter, the Ichabods would push the lead to 20 points, their largest of the contest and the deficit would be too much for the Jets to battle back from, as Washburn would defeat Newman 65-49.
THE COACHES
Darin Spence begins his ninth season as the Jets head coach, leading the Jets to a 3-10, 3-10 in the MIAA record so far in the 2020-21 season. Spence has compiled a 593 wins as a head women's basketball coach over a 29-year span across NCAA Division I and Division II, NAIA, and NJCAA schools. His eight years with the Jets have seen him amass a record of 120-112 overall and a 59-53 mark in Heartland Conference play. Under Spence's tenure, the Jets reached the Heartland Conference tournament in six of his seven seasons. Before coming to Newman, Spence spent one season at Barton Community College and eight seasons at Division I New Mexico State.
Toby Wynn is in his third season as the Lady Hornets Basketball coach for the 2020-21 season. Wynn is 46-16 in his second year as the head coach of the Lady Hornets. He is the second coach to win at least 20 games and go to the NCAA Tournament in his first two years at Emporia State. His 22 regular season wins last year were the second most by a first year coach in Lady Hornet history. He has won at least 20 games in each of his 15 seasons as a head coach, including four 30 win seasons.

This will be the 10th meeting between these two schools with Emporia State leading the series over Newman 6-3.
LAST TIME VS EMPORIA STATE
In the first quarter, the Jets would start the scoring off with a three point basket by
Madison Birnbaum to give the Jets the early advantage. The teams would exchange baskets until the score was 7-7 when Emporia State ( 2-1, 2-1) would take control as they would go on a 11-0 run to end the quarter and they would take an 18-7 lead after the first quarter. In the second quarter, Hornets would keep the run going as they would go on a 5-0 run before
Faith Mason-Vestal would end the run. Emporia State would continue to control the game to take a 42-23 lead into the intermission. The second half would start with the Hornets scoring nine straight points to obtain their largest lead of the game, 28. The Jets would score the final four points of the quarter to trail Emporia State by 23 going into the final quarter. In the fourth quarter, both teams would go back and forth with neither team being able to string together any big runs as Emporia State would beat Newman 80-56.

The Jets will hit the road with their first stop traveling to Hays, Kansas to take on Fort Hays State on Thursday Feb. 4 with tip-off at 5:30 PM.
