PITTSBURG. Kan. – The Newman Jets Women's Basketball team took on the Pittsburg State Gorillas in their final contest of the season. In a game where neither team would gain much separation from the other, the Gorillas would come out on top 69-61.
The Jets would use two 2 point baskets from
Sydney Nilles and a three point basket from
Rylee Meloy to jump out to an early 7-3 lead. The first quarter would be played pretty evenly as the four point lead by Newman would be the largest for either team in the opening period. Both teams would head into the second quarter tied at 11.
The second quarter would be another closely played quarter as the largest lead for either team in this quarter would also be 4 points. Both teams would struggle to begin the quarter as it would take more than three minutes for either team to score. Pittsburg State would take a three point lead going into the intermission 24-21.
In the first half of the third quarter, Pittsburg State would build some separation from Newman. They would gain the largest lead for either team, nine points, at the 4:47 mark where they would up 37-28. The Jets would fight back in the second half of the quarter to trail by only five points heading into the final quarter of play.
A three point basket by
Brooke Haney would cut the Gorilla lead down to just 2 points to begin the quarter. After Pitt State would score to stretch the lead back to four points,
Haley Albers would cut the Pitt State lead to just one point with 8:45 left to play. For the next 4:45, the Gorillas put together a 12-4 run to build their lead back up to 9 points with four minutes left to play. Newman would get the score to 60-56 behind a
Haley Albers three point basket and
Brooke Haney two point basket. That would be as close as the Jets would get it as the Gorillas would knock down their free throws down the stretch on their way to a 69-61 win over Newman.
The Jets would be led in scoring by
Amoni White who would score a career high 20 points.
Brooke Haney would add 13 points. The Gorillas were led in scoring by Kaylee DaMitz with 25 points. Newman would shoot 25 of 55 from the floor for 46 percent and 6 of 17 from behind the three point arc for 35 percent. Pitt State would shoot 23 of 59 from the floor for 39 percent and 8 of 26 from three point range for 31 percent.
