Jets Fall to #12 Lopers to End Their Road Trip

HAYS, Kan. – The Jets traveled to Kearney, Nebraska to take on another top 15 school in Nebraska-Kearney on Saturday afternoon inside the Health and Sports Center. Newman would take a lead in the second quarter after falling behind early before Nebraska Kearney would pull away late for a 60-40 victory.

The Jets would start the scoring off with a Faith Mason-Vestal jumper to gain the early advantage. Both teams would exchange baskets with neither team gaining much separation until 5:44 left in the opening quarter when Newman would go on a 7-0 run to gain a 16-9. Nebraska Kearney would score the final four points of the quarter to cut the Jets lead to 16-13 going into the second quarter.

In the second quarter, Nebraska-Kearney would start on a 12-2 run to take a 25-18 lead over the Jets before Amoni White would make a basket and draw the foul making the free throw making the score 25-21. In the final 3:36 of the first half, Newman held UNK scoreless and would cut the deficit to 1, 25-24 heading into the half.

Nebraska-Kearney would start the third quarter on a 5-0 run to gain a 30-24 lead with 5:27 left in the 3rd quarter. Makayla Hayes would stop the Lopers run with a basket that would cut the Lopers lead to 30-26 with 4:45 left in the quarter. Both teams would continue to battle for the remainder of the quarter, as the Lopers would lead the Jets 35-30 heading into the 4th quarter.

Neither team would gain much of an advantage in the beginning of the quarter. With 5:05 left in the fourth quarter and UNK leading 39-37, the Lopers would start to pull away from the Jets using an 11-3 run to gain a 10 point lead. Nebraska Kearney would take a 14 point lead shortly after a technical called on Newman's Head Coach Darin Spence. The Lopers would add on to their lead in the last two minutes on their way to a 60-40 victoy over the Jets. 

The Jets were led in scoring by Faith Mason-Vestal with 11 points. The Jets would shoot 15 of 51 from the field for 29.4 percent and 3 of 15 from three for 20 percent. The Lopers would shoot 21 of 49 from the floor for 42.9 percent and 9 for 25 from behind the three point arc for 36 percent.

Newman will be back in action on Saturday, February 13th at 1:30 pm as they take on Central Oklahoma on the road.
