WICHITA, Kan. – On a beautiful Saturday afternoon, the Newman Softball team took on the Pittsburg State Gorillas. Unfortunately for the Jets they would drop both games of the doubleheader to the Gorillas falling 4-2 in game one and 23-16 in game two.
Game one would be scoreless until the top of the fourth inning when Pittsburg State would break the tie with a solo homerun to lead 1-0. The Jets would respond in the bottom of the fourth when
Lauren Kuhrt would reach on an error that scored 2 runs to give the Jets a 2-1 lead. In the top of the 5
th inning, Pittsburg State would answer with three runs to take back the lead 4-2. The Gorillas would stop the Jets from scoring in the rest of the contest as they would beat Newman 4-2.
Anissa Ramos and
Emma Eck each had 2 hits in the game one loss.
Game two would be a high scoring affair. In the top of the first Pittsburg State would tally four runs to take the early advantage. Newman would respond with four runs of their own to tie the game at 4-4. Pittsburg State would take back the lead with three runs in the top of the second to lead 7-4. A
Taylor Ullery homerun off the scoreboard would make the game 7-5. The Gorillas would add to their lead with three runs in the third and five runs in the 4
th to take a 15-5 lead before Newman would cut the deficit to 6 with four runs in the 4
th including another homerun by Ullery to make the score 15-9.
With the score 16-9 in the bottom of the 5
th, Newman would cut the deficit to four, 16-12 which included Ullery's third homerun of the contest. Pittsburg State responded by scoring seven runs in the top of the sixth to lead 23-12. Newman would cut it down the deficit to seven 23-16 in the bottom of the 6
th, but the Gorillas lead would be too much as the Jets would fall in the second game of the doubleheader by a final score of 23-16.
The Jets would have a season high 20 hits in this game with 7 players having multi-hit game including
Taylor Ullery who went 4-5 with 3 Homeruns and 7 RBI's.
The Jets will be back in action on Friday, March 26
th as they host Central Missouri in an MIAA Conference doubleheader with first pitch set for 2:00 pm.
