Women's Tennis Comes Up Just Short of MIAA Conference Tournament

WICHITA, Kan. – In the final week of the regular season, the Newman Jets Women's Tennis team needed to win both matches against Fort Hays State and Nebraska Kearney to make it to the MIAA Conference Tournament.  After defeating the Tigers on Saturday 6-1, it came down to a win or go home match against the Lopers. Nebraska Kearney would defeat the Jets 6-1 and take the final spot in the MIAA Conference Tournament.

Against Fort Hays State, the Jets were able to sweep doubles completion against the Tigers.  In the first doubles match, Antonia Ramos and Emily Young would takedown Stefany Stemmer and Sydney McAdoo 6-4.  Isabela Campos Bifano and Marie Brunet would defeat Grace Holgerson and Fiorella Mendez 6-2.  In the final doubles match, Mirella D'Angelo Cavalcanti and Lauren Esfeld would defeat Aliyah Frederick and Kylie Aufdengarten 6-0.

In singles, Young would defeat Stefany Stemmer 6-1, 6-2.  Bifano would win a three set thriller against Fiorella Mendez 6-4, 3-6, 6-0.  Marie Brunet would pick up the win 6-1, 6-0 over McAdoo.  Antonia Ramos would take care of business against Holgerson 6-1, 6-1.  Cavalcanti would defeat Frederick 6-0, 7-6(4-0).  In the final singles match, Esfeld would fall to Aufdengarten 6-0, 6-1.

In the win or go home match against the Lopers, the Jets were unable to pick up a double win.  Young and Ramos would fall 6-2 against Becerra and Neil.  Brunet and Bifano would fall 6-3 to Hunter and Sherikulova.  In the final doubles match, Cavalcanti and Esfeld would fall to Zamorano and Gannavaram 6-0.

In singles action, Emily Young would pick up the only win for the Jets with a 3 set thriller against Becerra dropping the first set 6-4 then winning the final two sets 6-3 and 6-2.  Bifano would drop her match to Zamorano in a three set thriller 6-4, 3-6, 3-6.  Brunet would fall to Sherikulova in straight sets 6-3, 6-0.  Ramos would fall to Hunter 6-1, 6-1.  Cavalcanti would fall in a heart breaker to Neil dropping the first set 6-2, winning the second set 6-2, before falling in the final set 11-9.  In the final singles match, Esfeld would fall to Gannavaram 6-1, 6-0.
