Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Turnovers costly for Newman in game against Fort Hays State

HAYS, Kan - The Jets Women's Basketball team (4-7, 1-5) wrapped up their play before Christmas break on Sunday with a game against Fort Hays State (10-3, 6-0). Turnover were a big problem for Newman during the game, with the Jets turning the ball over 25 times on their way to a 83-51 loss to the Tigers.

Newman hung on at the start, only trailing by five at the end of the first quarter. Lauryn Dubbert got hot early, shooting 3 for 5 from the field that quarter. The Jets began to fall behind in the second, but some great defensive efforts from Maddie Spagnola and Carrissa Beck who each grabbed two steals that quarter helped to keep them in the game.

Despite trailing 27-38 going into halftime, Newman showed some much needed efficiency, shooting 42% from three and an even 50% overall from the field. Britney Ho slipped back into her usual from, leading the team in points and rebounds by halftime with eight and six.

The second half is when Newman began to fall behind, as despite keeping their efficient shooting numbers, a number of turnovers proved costly and Fort Hays began to pull away, leading by 24 going into the final quarter. The Jets wouldn't be able to mount that steep deficit in the fourth, eventually falling 83-51 to FHSU

Britney Ho led the team in points and rebounds, scoring 13 on 5-11 shooting and grabbing eight boards.

Lauryn Dubbert also reached double digit figures, putting up 10 points for the Jets.

Maddie Spagnola led the team in multiple categories, making the most threes for the Jets and dishing out the most assists with five. She also co-led the team in steals with Carissa Beck.

Newman goes into a short Christmas break now before getting back into action on New Years Eve with a matchup against Emporia State.
