Makayla Hayes honored on Senior Day as season comes to a close

WICHITA, Kan. – Newman wrapped up the 2021-22 season with a visit from in state MIAA foe, Pittsburg State.  The Jets and Gorillas played on Saturday afternoon during which Senior Day was held for the program's lone Senior, Makayla Hayes.  It was Pittsburg State climbing their way to the top with a 77-52 win.

Newman finished the campaign 3-25 (1-21 MIAA).  Pittsburg State ends on a high note with a 16-12 (11-11 MIAA) mark, good enough for a berth in the MIAA Tournament as the 8 seed.

Newman jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead when Senior, Makayla Hayes knocked down a trifecta to open the scoring on the first possession and then Britney Ho followed suit with a three of her own moments later.  The two teams traded baskets and mini scoring runs to reach a 13-11 advantage for the Gorillas.

Pitt State used a 16-9 scoring differential to push the Jets away.  The Jets brought the game no closer than 4 in the second half with the Gorillas heating up and shooting 16-28 from the field along with 6-11 from deep.

Britney Ho needed just 21 minutes to notch 13 points and grab 9 boards.  The junior wanted to finish more in the paint, but just couldn't find the right touch.  Laura Bello went for 10 and 7 in the season finale, to cap off her freshman season.

Makayla Hayes was honored after the game, but signed off on her Newman Jet playing career with a perfect day from the field shooting 2-2, 1-1 3-point and 1-1 on free throws to tally 6 points.  The Neosho native also added 4 rebounds, an assist, block and steal.

Coach Drew Johnson and staff will head into the offseason and assess areas of improvement as they hit the recruiting trail full go.
