TOPEKA, Kan. – Newman finished off its Washburn Invitational play Sunday. The Jets split day one of the Invitational with a 5-0 win over the University of Mary and a 5-0 loss at the hands of St. Cloud State on Saturday. On Sunday, the Jets split once again with a 5-4 walk off victory over Sioux Falls and an 8-4 loss to close out the weekend.
Game 1:
Newman needed every last pitch to escape the Sioux Falls game with a win. USF led 4-0 after 4 innings and the Jets were forced to look inward to find success.
Megan Walz tossed three shutout innings out of the bullpen to earn the win as the Jets used three big hits to pull off the comeback.
Laurie Cooke singled home
Mackenzie Anderson in the fourth inning to put the Jets on the board. In the sixth,
Lauren Kuhrt singled scoring Anderson and
Haley Schoeling.
In the 7
th, the Jets were down to their last strike before loading the bases bringing up
Mackenzie Anderson who was seeing her first action on the season. The senior answered the bell ripping the first pitch she saw back up the box as two runs came across to score, giving the Jets a 5-4 win.
Game 2:
The Golden Eagles brought their A game at the plate. Minnesota Crookston jumped out to a 6-1 lead and ran starting pitcher
Madison Dewitt from the game after just 3.0+ innings.
Newman worked to scratch across runs with a
Taylor Ullery homerun, her second on the year.
Mackenzie Anderson hit a sacrifice fly while Laurie Cookie smoked a 2 run double down the left field line as part of a three run sixth for the Jets.
The Golden Eagles were just too much as Newman fell 8-4 thanks to some insurance runs late.
The Jets sit at 4-6 after the Washburn Invitational and look for some solid footing at home for their next 14 games.
