WICHITA, Kan. – Newman sought redemption Saturday afternoon against Northwest Missouri State after two disappointing showings on Friday against MWSU. The Jets delivered everything you could want and more as Newman blew away the Bearcats on their way to a sweep.
Game 1 Final: NW 1 Newman 9
Game 2 Final: NW 4 Newman 12
The Jets are now 9-15 (3-5 MIAA) after two decisive victories Saturday afternoon. Northwest Missouri drops to a woeful 6-25 (0-6 MIAA).
Game 1:
Anna Veltien took to the circle in game one. The senior put on her best showing of the season on her way to her first win of 2022. Veltien allowed just 6 hits and 1 run while punching out three in her complete game performance.
Early on the Bearcats' Olivia Daugherty put NW ahead with a solo shot in the top of the first. Just as soon as Northwest kissed that ball good bye, the lead evaporated as Newman poured on three runs in the bottom half of the first.
The Jets used 7 doubles and a homerun to bury the Bearcats. The game was capped off with a
Lindsay Mayo 2 run home run in the bottom of the 6
th.
The final play was the first time multiple runs were scored in one play. All nine Jets got a hit and 7 drove in at least one run. Mayo finished with 3 RBI's on a 2 for 4 day with a double to go along with her game sealing home run.
Game 2:
The Jets scored 12 runs in game 2 on 14 hits. The offense was led by
Samantha Gutierrez who was 3 for 3 with 4 RBI. Gutierrez smacked a massive 3-run bomb in the bottom of the 4
th as a response to the 4 spot posted by the Bearcats in the top half of that inning.
Janine Gutierrez picked up her fourth win of the season by tossing the final 1.1 innings of the game as the Jets clinched yet another run rule.
It was
Taylor Ullery's 2-run double in the bottom of the fifth that made the game final at 12-4.
Newman will hit the road for a short while as they will not be back home until Tuesday April 5
th. Up next for the Jets is a trip Tuesday to take on William Jewell.
