Senior Day Dampened by RiverHawks

WICHITA – Just over 12 hours removed from knocking off #2 Rogers State, Newman took the field against Northeastern State.  Saturday was Senior Day for the Jets as the RiverHawks came to town.  Four seniors, Mackenzie AndersonAnna VeltienTaylor Ullery and Lauren Kuhrt, were honored prior to game ones first pitch.  The day was dampened by two RiverHawk wins over the Jets.

Game 1 Final: NSU 9 Newman 7
Game 2 Final: NSU 8 Newman 4

Newman is now 15-25 (6-12 MIAA) after dropping a pair in their home finale.  Northeastern State bounced back from a sweep they suffered Friday night at UCO with two wins Saturday to advance to 23-20 (11-7 MIAA).

Game 1:

Samantha Gutierrez was on fire early.  There was no upset hangover from the Jets early in this one as Gutierrez crushed a 3-run rocket to left field.

After allowing two runs over the next two innings, the Jets added another with an RBI double from Madison Canez.

4 unearned runs in the top of the fifth for NSU put the Jets behind 6-4.

Canez hit another RBI single and was followed up immediately by Lauren Kuhrt who hit an RBI single herself.  A baserunner mistake got the Jets doubled up on an infield line drive taking the momentum back to the RiverHawks.

The RiverHawks added three in the top of the seventh to take a 9-6 lead heading into the home team's last chance.

Tori Waggoner replaced Gianna Navarro in the game and immediately made an impact as she scored Laurie Cooke with an RBI double.  The Jets brought the game winning run to the plate, but were unable to come out on top.

Game 2:

The Jets again jumped out in front with a 2 RBI double from Gutierrez in the first.  The RiverHawks separated themselves from the Jets with 6 runs in two innings in the fourth and fifth.

The Jets got two runs back in the sixth with a Gutierrez RBI single and a Waggoner RBI double.

NSU separated themselves again with back-to-back solo homeruns in the seventh to take the second game and sweep the day.

The Jets have wrapped up the home portion of their schedule and will be back in action at Southern Nazarene this Tuesday.
