Slow first half costly for Jets as they fall to Missouri Western

1/12/2023 9:45:00 PM

Box Score WICHITA - Women's Basketball hosted another challenging conference opponent, the Missouri Western Griffins. The Griffons are currently sitting at #2 in conference play with only two conference losses.

The Jets had a poor first quarter only scoring 7 points. Britney Ho, the Jets leading scorer, was held to zero first quarter points. Newman could not string any stops on the defensive end, allowing 18 points in the quarter.

The poor shooting trend continued into the second quarter, with only 12 points scored, shooting only 29.4% from the field. Whereas the Griffins were red hot shooting 53% from the field. The Jets defense had no answer for a fast-paced, efficient Griffin's offense as they scored 14 points in transition in the first half. Newman trailed by 21 at half.

Newman came out of halftime with better scoring, finally getting shots to fall. Carissa Beck hit a big three to start the third quarter, her first of the night. Ho started to heat up, going 2 for 5 from the field. The Jets finally gain some momentum, by only being outscored 15-13 in the third quarter.

Newman came out hot in the fourth quarter, hitting five threes, including two momentum shifting threes by Center, Valerija Lioukina. The hot second half from the Jets was never quite enough to put any pressure on the Griffins.

In the end, the second half effort came too late to overcome the first half deficit.

Britney Ho led the Jets in scoring with 16 points along with 10 rebounds. Her fourth double-double of the year.

Freshman, Amaya Perez led the team in rebounds and assists at four a piece.

Newman is back in action on Saturday, January 14th at 1:30pm hosting the Northwest Missouri State Bearcats.
