Box Score CLAREMORE, Okla. - Women's Basketball fell to Rogers State on Thursday night in double overtime 78 to 68.
The Jets got off to another slow start, having to play from behind the entire first half being down to as much as 26-10. Newman couldn't find the basket early on and the Hillcats capitalized on that by shooting over 50% from beyond the arc in the first half.
The Jets quickly found a rhythm and would break into the RSU deficit by going on an 11-4 run starting with a Britney Ho layup and 3's by Amiyah Perez and Carissa Beck. Ho would lead the Jets into halftime with 10 points with RSU leading 30-21 into half.
Newman came out hot to start the 2nd half and would cut into the Hillcats deficit to as close as 3 and would outscore RSU 12-7 to end the 3rd quarter and seemed to have the momentum on their side going into the final quarter but Rogers State would kill the momentum and get their lead back up to 8 after a Bailey Kliewer layup, putting time in their favor in the final 8 minutes of the game.
With their backs against the wall the Jets dug deep and shut down the Rogers State offense and countered with an 8-0 run of their own and tied the game at 47-47 after Tori Vang went 1-2 from the line to tie the game with 1:25 left in the game.
The Jets would take the lead after Britney Ho sank both free throws after Trinity Jackson fouled out to give the Jets their first lead since the first half when they would only lead for just 12 seconds.
RSU would tie the game at 49-49 when Ho would pick up her 5th foul and finish with 19.
Rogers State missed their final shot in regulation and gave the Jets an opportunity with 0.9 seconds to win the game but overtime would be needed to decide tonight's slugfest.
Valeriya Lioukina would step up for Newman in overtime, scoring the first 8 points with back to back 3 point plays to keep Newman in the lead. Foul trouble would haunt her however as she would pick up her 5th foul with under 3 minutes remaining, bringing coach Johnson to dig deep into his playbook as both Ho and Lioukina would be on the bench the rest of the game.
Lioukina finished the game with a season high 15 points.
1 overtime wouldn't be agreeable for both teams and a 2nd overtime would be needed to settle the game
After back and forth scoring by both teams Rogers State would get the final blow and win the game 78 to 68.
Newman is back in action this Saturday against Northeastern State in a matchup set for 1:30 PM.
