Topeka, KS- The Jets faced Sioux Falls in their 4th and final matchup in the Washburn Tournament.
It was all USF for the first 3 innings. USF kicked things off in the top of the 1st inning, scoring 2 runs to take the lead. In the second, third inning and 4th innings, USF added 3 more runs to extend their lead 5-0.
Finally, in the bottom of the 4th inning, the Jets got their offense rolling. Gianna De Luca-Paape got on base from a fielding error by USF, which allowed Madi Canez to advance to third base and put Samantha Gutierrez across the plate. Later in the inning Kaitlyn Praught singled to left field, putting De Luca-Paape at second and Canez across the plate to cut USF's lead to 3. Hannah Mendez came up to the plate and singled to center field, hitting De Luca-Paape in.Tori Waggoner joined the hot hitting and singled to left field in her at bat. This single allowed Praught to score. The Jets were down 5-4 going into the 5th inning.
USF answered back with a run in the 6th inning to extend their lead 6-4. Newman would not be able to score again, and USF took the win 9-4.
Gutierrez finished the day 2-4 from the plate.
Waggoner, De Luca-Paape, Praught, and Mendez all recorded an RBI.
The Jets are back in action February 28th at 2 and 4PM. Newman is set to face East Central at NU Softball Field.
