Women’s Basketball drops conference opener to Riverhawks

Jets fall short to NSU, 78-50

TAHLEQUAH, Okla.- The Jets opened up MIAA play facing Northeastern State on the road. The last time out, the Jets downed the Panthers at the Drury Thanksgiving Classic. Against the Riverhawks, the Jets fell 78-50. 

How it Happened:
-The Riverhawks were first on the board, connecting with two of four free throws in the first two possessions of play. After the made free throws, the Riverhawks and Jets were trading back and forth turnovers for the first few possessions of play. Paige Craft put the Jets on the board with a single free throw to make it 2-1 at the 7:25 mark. The Riverhawks then earned another trip to the free throw line, where they sunk them both to make their lead 4-1. Neither team made a field goal in the first five minutes of play. Delainey Wylie came up big for the Jets defense, recording two blocks to help keep the Riverhawks from scoring. Layla Pierce hit the first bucket at the 4:55 mark to make it a one point game at 4-3 going into the first media timeout. Craft added her first field goal of the game to take the lead from the Riverhawks at 5-4. NSU continued to find their way to the line, hitting four more free throws to make it an 8-5 advantage for the Riverhawks. Pierce connected with a three to tie it at 8 all. After Pierce's bucket, the Riverhawks went on a small run to take the lead to 13-9. Hayley Hughes added her first basket of the night with just 12 seconds left in the quarter. The Jets trailed 13-11 to end the first quarter. 
-Jaeden McMillin scored the Jets first points of the second quarter with a turnaround jumper. Craft scored the next Jets possession to put the Jets at 15-17 with 8:03 to play in the half. The Riverhawks were able to maintain their lead by continuing to earn trips to the free throw line. McMillin added four of her own free throws to cut the deficit to 21-19  with under 5 minutes to play in the half. Monica Redondo hit her first points of the night after a strong drive and was able to connect with an and one to make the score 23-22 in favor of NSU. With 2:30 to go, the Jets were in the bonus. Saige Grampsas was fouled, sending her to the line where she connected with one to tie it at 23 all. Brooklyn Love hit a three with 36 seconds left to take the lead at 27-25. The Jets were able to hold onto that lead heading into the halftime break. 
-Out of the break, the Riverhawks were first to score to tie the game. Valeriya Lioukina hit her fourth point of the night to retake the Jets lead. NSU continued to battle with the Jets with a back and forth game. The Riverhawks regained control with a basket by Courtney Lee, her seventh point of the game, at 32-31. Grampsas knocked down her first three of the game to push the lead out to 34-32 with 4:44 to play. The Riverhawks were quick to tie it up with an and one conversion. NSU started to heat up offensively with three minutes to play in the quarter, finding themselves up by five points at 43-38. Points by Pierce and Craft helped the Jets stay within four points, 48-44, at the end of the third quarter. 
-In the first four  minutes of the fourth quarter, the Riverhawks went on a 13-4 run to take their lead out to 61-48. The Jets were forced to take a timeout to try to stop the run. The Jets could never quite get their offense going in the final quarter, which allowed the Riverhawks to extend their lead out to 17 points with under four minutes left to play.  The Jets were held to just six points in the fourth quarter, allowing NSU to take the win at 78-50. 

Player Notes:
-Craft led the Jets offense with nine points, going 3-6 from the field.
-Wylie added three blocs and five rebounds.

The Jets are back on Saturday in Fort Smith, Arkansas to take on the Lions.
