Newman played the number thirty-eight ranked Southeastern Oklahoma State this past Saturday in the first out of three away matches they played over the weekend. The match came down to two tie breakers that decided the winner.
The girls competed against Southern Arkansas, who is ranked fifteenth in the country, in a match where the score didn't fully reflect what happened on the courts.
The Jets wrapped up their away trip with a match against the University of Arkansas Fort Smith. A very close doubles point loss deprived Newman from claiming the win.
Match 1:
The Savage Storms claimed the doubles point after winning all three matches. Partners Luna Feillon and Marie Brunet put up a challenge forcing their opponents to beat them 6-4.
Number fifty four in the country, at the time, Dana Issabayeva won her match at the number one with ease beating her opponent in straight sets 6-2, 6-3.
Ani Zeikidze won her match after her opponent withdrew due to injury. Despite her opponent's injury, Zeikidze was ahead in the match with a 7-5, 4-3 lead and was on her way to claim the victory and the second point for the Jets
Marie Brunet didn't go down easily. After winning the first set with an impressive 6-2 result, Brunet gave up the second set forcing her to play a deciding third set . Despite giving it all, Brunet lost in a heartbreaking third set tie break.
Luna Feillon was able to recover from the loss of the first set and came back to claim a second set win and force a third set. Her opponent took the third set and claimed the win, even with some great tennis display from Feillon.
Match 2:
The Muleriders started the match winning the doubles point after claiming two wins out of the three matches. The Jets were very close to upsetting the number fifteen team in the country after Antonia Ramos and Dana Issabayeva won their doubles match 6-2, and Martina Lolli and Nicole Bono fought in a very close 4-6 match against their opponents.
Marie Brunet kept showcasing her great form forcing a second straight third set against a ranked team. This time, Brunet only had time to play a third set super tie breaker to ten points. Marie wasn't able to get the win but she showed once again her high level of tennis and proved that she can compete against the best teams in the country.
Luna Feillon got the only win for the Jets in the match. After forcing a third set in the previous match, Feillon was able to do it again. After losing the first set 2-6, Luna was able to bounce back and win the second set 6-4. Unlike the match before, Luna was able to get the win after beating her opponent 12-10 in a third set super tie breaker. The French Freshman is accumulating some great performances and is becoming a very important player for the Jets with the MIAA opener around the corner.
Match 3:
The Jets fell just short of winning the deciding doubles point in their match against the Lions after all three doubles matches ended with a 4-6 result in favor of the Lions. That loss would cost the Jets dearly later in the match since it would come down to a one point difference at the end.
Marie Brunet claimed a much deserved win, wrapping up a great weekend competing against two ranked teams and winning her match to get the first point for the Jets in the match. Two sets is all Brunet needed to claim the win finishing with a 6-4, 6-3 result.
Nicole Bono had a great performance winning in straight sets 6-2, 7-6 to claim the second win for the Jets.
Things would heat up after Antonia Ramos beat her opponent with a powerful 6-1, 6-1 final score.
The Lions clinched the win after they secured the fourth point in the number 5 spot.
Upcoming:
The Jets will travel to Kearney, Nebraska on March 28th to play the University of Nebraska at Kearney for their MIAA opener.
