Edmond, Okla. - Women's Basketball traveled to Edmond to face Central Oklahoma in the last game of the season for both teams. Neither the Jets nor the Broncos were able to qualify for the postseason this year, unlike last year where both teams qualified for the postseason in a breathtaking last game of the regular season.
With nothing to play for but pride, emotions were high and noticeable throughout the whole game as both teams had players playing in their last college career game.
Carissa Beck and Jaeden McMillin started the game hot giving the Jets a four point lead early in the first quarter. The Broncos weren't able to score in the first couple of minutes but then responded, tying the game and taking the lead by two points. The Jets battled back and regained the lead after a layup from McMillin and a three pointer from Beck. Newman was able to maintain the lead throughout the remainder of the first quarter ending with a five point lead over the Broncos.
The second quarter started with a three pointer from Beck that widened the lead to eight points. A couple plays later, the Jets were able to get their lead up to ten points after a layup from Valeriya Lioukina. Following that, the Broncos got their offense going and denied the Jets from scoring for six minutes closing the gap down to one point.
Central Oklahoma got the lead back late in the second quarter, but would lose it after an altercation between a Broncos player and Amaya Josey resulted in a technical foul for each player and another one for the home team. Beck scored both free throws to regain the lead once more. But that wasn't enough to change the momentum, as the Broncos took the lead back in the following play and stayed ahead for the remainder of the half.
After a competitive first half and a great defensive effort from the Jets in the first two quarters, the second half had a different narrative as the Broncos started scoring more and the Jets were not able to keep up with them.
Despite the result, some Jets had a great last game of the season.
Carissa Beck closed her college career with a fantastic game, leading the Jets with eighteen points and going perfect from the free throw line.
Valeriya Lioukina finished her season on a high note scoring nine points and accumulating a career high thirteen rebounds
Jaeden McMillin had an outstanding performance as well adding eight points and a career high eleven rebounds. Four quick fouls stopped her from seeing more playing time.
Amaya Josey helped the team too and was one of the team leaders in her last game as a Jet.
The Jets wrap up their season and will have some time to rearm their team for next season.
