WICHITA- Womens Tennis won one of the closest, if not the closest, match of the season against Emporia State on Sunday afternoon. A third set tie breaker decided the winner of the match, with Zeikidze overcoming clear physical struggles to win her match. The Jets were looking for a win after not being able to upset neither of their top twenty opponents last week, even though they were able to compete very well and were closer on the court than what the final score said.
In their last match,
Dana Issabayeva and
Martina Lolli were the only two Jets that were able to get a win in the singles matches. Issabayeva beat the number three singles player in the country to claim her eleventh singles win of the season and her fourth in a row.
The Jets started the match winning the doubles point. Cousins
Ani Zeikidze and
Sofiko Zeikidze won their match with a quick 6-2.
Antonia Ramos and
Dana Issabayeva followed their teammates lead and won theirs 6-4 to clinch the doubles point for Newman.
Dana Issabayeva got things started in the singles matches with another two set win. Issabayeva added another 6-0 set to her collection in the second set despite having to fight to win the first one 7-6. With this win, the number thirty five player in the country moves to twelve wins on the season and adds her fifth one in a row.
Marie Brunet claimed another singles point for the Jets with an impressive 6-2, 6-4 win. Brunet has showcased some great tennis so far this season.
Nicole Bono and
Antonia Ramos lost two very close matches with both second sets being so close that either player could have won them. Small details made the difference.
With the match at 3-3,
Ani Zeikidze was able to turn up her game and win the second set 6-2 to force a third set after not being able to win a close first set. With apparent pain, Zeikidze was able to overcome it and win the third set 7-6 in a crazy third set tie breaker to clinch the final 4-3 point.
The Jets move to 2-3 in conference and 12-9 overall.
