Women’s Tennis split on MIAA opening weekend

Hays, Kan.- Newman played the number twenty two ranked Nebraska Kearney Lopers this past Thursday in the first out of two away matches they played over the week. The Lopers outmatched the Jets in a match where Issabayeva was able to find success. 

 

The Jets wrapped up their away trip with a match against the Fort Hays State Tigers on Friday. The girls won a very competitive match to earn their first MIAA win. 

 

Match 1:

The No. 22 Lopers started the match winning the doubles point after winning 6-2 two out of the three matches, giving the Jets no chances to get in the matches. 

 

Dana Issabayeva had another outstanding performance beating the No 24 singles player in the country. After winning the first set 6-3, her rival reacted in the second set and leveled the match with a 3-6 score. Dana was able to bounce back from the second set and claim the third set decider with a 6-4 score.  

 

Nicole Bono faced the No. 9 singles player in the country. After a tough first set, Bono competed in the second set but was unable to win it. 

 

Luna Feillon and Antonia Ramos both had very competitive matches forcing their opponents to give their best in order to beat them. 

 

Match 2: 

The Jets were coming off a tough matchup with the #22 Lopers but had a chance to bounce back and claim their first MIAA victory of the season against the Fort Hays State Tigers. 

 

The Jets weren't able to get the doubles point again, but this time it was a very close point. The number one partners beat Ani Zeikidze and Sofiko Zeikidze to claim the first match, Marie Brunet and Nicole Bono won their match with a close 6-4 score. The decision came down to the number two partners Dana Issbayeva and Antonia Ramos. The Tigers took the doubles point after a heartbreaking 6-7 score 

 

Dana Issabayeva won her second match of the week, to go undefeated in the first two conference matches. She beat her opponent with a powerful 6-0, 6-1 final score. 

 

Ani Zeikidze followed Issabayeva's steps and had a fantastic performance as well, winning her match in straight sets 6-2, 6-2. 

 

Marie Brunet fought until the end in a match that was decided in the third set and could have gone either way. 

 

Nicole Bono showed no mercy and played flawless tennis to beat her opponent in straight sets 6-1, 6-2. 

 

Luna Feillon won her match in the third set. After winning the first set 6-4, Feillon's opponent turned up her game to level the match at 1-1. Despite being a Freshman, Feillon showed up to the challenge and destroyed her opponent 6-1 in the decider third set to claim the win. 

 

Martina Lolli played great tennis and made her opponent win the third set. Lolli won the first set 6-2 and battled to try to get the win but was unable to do it. 

 

The Jets won the match 4-3 to claim the first MIAA win of the season and move to a 1-1 conference record. 

 

Upcoming:

The Jets will host two conference matches on Thursday and Saturday against Washburn and Northwest Missouri State.
