Hays, Kan. -Softball wrapped up this weekend's away trip with a matchup against the Fort Hays State Tigers. After a challenging start and trailing by five at one point, the Jets scored eight runs in the top of the fifth inning to complete another comeback. Game two started slow with three scoreless innings but after that, the Tigers were able to score in three consecutive innings to take game two.
The last time Newman played was on Friday afternoon in a doubleheader against the Nebraska Kearney Lopers. The Jets won game one after scoring ten runs in the top of the fourth inning to claim their 19th win of the season, which is the most by any team in program history.
With the win in game one against the Tigers, the Jets claimed their 20th win of the season, a number never reached by any Newman Softball team.
Game 1:
The first game started with a scoreless first inning with Newman leaving two runners on base.
The Tigers were the first ones to score, driving in a total of five runs in the bottom of the second and third inning.
Neither team was able to score in the fourth inning, leaving the Jets trailing by five runs going into the top of the fifth inning.
Aj Borja got the hitting party started for the Jets in the top of the fifth with a double to left center field that scored Hayley Bonython for the first Jet run.
Anissa Ramos followed Borja's lead and hit another double to score two more runs for Newman.
A single from Madi Canez scored Gianna Navarro to put the Jets within one run of the Tigers.
Kayla Lopez came in clutch for Newman with a triple to right center field that scored Canez and Ramos to take the lead from the Tigers.
Hayley Bonython joined the batting party with a single to shortstop that scored Lopez to increase the Jets lead.
Borja added another run with a single through the right side that scored Bonython to make it a total of eight runs and nine hits in the inning for the Jets.
The Tigers were only able to answer with one run in the bottom of the sixth that wasn't enough to tie the game or reclaim the lead.
Jackie Gold claimed the win to move to an impressive eleven wins in the season. Gold recorded another seven strikeout game and was a key factor for the Jets to complete the comeback.
Game 2:
After a high scoring game one, the second game started offensively slow with neither team being able to score in the first three innings.
The Tigers scored first again in game two, driving in three runs in the bottom of the fourth to stop the scoring drought. With the Jets not being able to answer in the top of the fifth, Fort Hays took advantage of their momentum to score another run in the bottom of the fifth.
Anissa Ramos got the Jets offense going with a single to right field to try to aim for another comeback.
Hayley Bonython saw the opportunity and took it with a ground out that scored Ramos for the first Newman run of the game.
Fort Hays was able to stop the Jets comeback this time and claimed the win in game two.

Newman will travel to Pittsburg and Joplin next weekend for the last two doubleheaders of the season.
