Tahlequah, Okla. -Women's Tennis traveled to Northeastern State to play their last away conference match on Monday afternoon. The Jets were ready to battle with a post season spot on the line. Newman put up a fight and was closer to win than what the scoreboard led to think.
The RiverHawks were coming off of a 6-1 win against Emporia and were looking to repeat that against the Jets. Newman's last match was against Central Oklahoma in a 3-4 loss that was decided by the doubles point.
Ani Zeikidze's great form gave the Jets hope for a comeback, but some strong performances from the Bronchos numbers three and four denied the Jets comeback.
The match started with some very competitive doubles matches, probably the most competitive in the season so far.
The Zeikidze cousins battled her opponents to a 4-6 match that could have gone either way. Small details decided the winners of the match.
Dana Issabayeva and
Antonia Ramos forced their rivals to play up to seven games in order to beat them 5-7.
Marie Brunet and
Nicole Bono won the third doubles match with a strong 6-2 result. With the Jets only claiming the point in court number three, the doubles point went to the RiverHawks.
Ani Zeikidze won the first point for the Jets after another outstanding third set win. Zeikidze won her match 6-4, 0-6, 1-0 to claim her third singles win in a row and continue her positive form.
Marie Brunet lost her match but it was so close that she was only a few points away from winning. Brunet lost the first set with a close 4-6, but was able to bounce back and battle her way to a third set super tiebreaker after winning the second set 7-6. Marie lost the match in the tie breaker only being two points away from the win.
Antonia Ramos was coming off of a perfect 6-0, 6-0 match and was looking to continue her great form. Ramos, full of confidence, had another brilliant performance and won her match in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 to claim the second point for the Jets.
Luna Feillon,
Nicole Bono, and
Dana Issabayeva were all close in their matches but were unable to get a win.
