WICHITA- Newman faced two top twenty ranked teams in one of the toughest weekends so far in the season for the Jets. The first match was against the number twelve ranked Washburn Ichabods on Thursday afternoon. To wrap up the weekend, the Jets faced the number seventeenth ranked Northwest Missouri State Bearcats on Saturday afternoon.
The Jets were coming off of a big win against the Fort Hays State Tigers on March 29th. With Issabayeva, Zeikidze, Bono, and Feillon winning their respective matches.
Match 1:
Newman was unable to win the doubles point after some great performances from the Ichabods players. Cousins Ana Zeikidze and Sofiko Zeikidze were the closest one with a 4-6 final score.
Dana Issabayeva completed an incredible comeback to win her match at number 1 and defeat the number three ranked player in the country. After losing the first set 4-6, Issabayeva didn't give up and fought back forcing a third set super tie breaker after winning the second set 7-6. Dana won the super tie breaker to claim one of her biggest wins of the season.
Ana Zeikidze won a battle of a match at the number two seed against a ranked opponent. After winning the first set 7-6, the second set went to her opponent, forcing a third set super tie break. Zeikidze won the decider and claimed the win, giving the Jets the lead in the match.
Marie Brunet lost a very close match that could have gone either way. Brunet won the first set 6-1 showcasing some very good tennis. Her opponent upped her game and responded by winning the second set and forcing a third set. In a set that was very close, the Ichabod player came out on top to claim the win.
Match 2:
The Jets weren't able to win the doubles point despite having won one of the matches before starting to play due to a forfeit. The Zeikidze cousins were very close to winning again, playing all the way to a 5-7 match.
Dana Issabayeva completed an almost perfect match and weekend after beating her opponent 6-0, 6-1. Issabayeva now accumulates ten wins in the spring season.
Ana Zeikidze competed very well and was close to forcing a third set in a match that ended 4-6, 4-6.
Martina Lolli got the 6-0, 6-0 win at the number six seed after a forfeited match from the Bearcats.
