Softball closes out play in Arkansas with first win of the season

Jets defeat Arkansas Tech, falls to Upper Iowa

BENTONVILLE, Ark.-  The Jets finished out the Alvin Early Classic against Arkansas Tech and Upper Iowa. In the morning game, Newman got their first win of the season against the Golden Suns. The Jets took the matchup against Arkansas Tech, 6-3. The Jets fell to Upper Iowa, 4-3. 
 
Vs. Arkansas Tech
-The game started with Paola Zamacona and the Jets defense forcing ATU's offense to three fly outs. Following that, AJ Borja earned a walk in the first at bat for Newman. Lani Dryden placed a sacrifice bunt to move Borja up within scoring distance. Gianna Navarro seized the opportunity hitting a single down to center field to give Borja enough time to score the first run of the game. Navarro reached second on a bad throw and later advanced to third on a wild pitch. Then, Tori Waggoner returned the favor hitting a double to left field to score Navarro and put the Jets up 2-0. Zamacona continued her good form forcing Arkansas Tech to three quick pop outs to end the top of the second. AJ Broja had her first hit of the game in the bottom of the second with a single to center field. An inspired Navarro added her second hit in as many at bats to score Borja and add the third run for Newman. After that, the Jets held the Golden Suns to no hits or runs recording three quick outs. In the bottom of the third, Madi Canez earned her second walk of the game, then advanced to second on a wild pitch and got to third after a ground out. Then, to score for the third consecutive inning, Hannah Nordby batted in Canez with a single to center field. 
 
-In the top of the fourth, ATU got their offense going with two hits including a single, a double, and two runs scored, the first one off of the double and the second one off of a sacrifice bunt. Despite giving up the runs, Zamacona recorded her first swinging strikeout of the game. Continuing her outstanding performance, Gianna Navarro recorded a double that scored Borja for the Jets' fifth run of the game. Hayley Bonython added a single but it didn't lead to a run. In another attempt to come back, ATU recorded three hits and a run in the top of the fifth. Before the last out, Katelyn Westover replaced Zamacona on the mound. Then, in the bottom of the fifth, Norby forced an error to get to first base. After that, Borja's single to center field was enough for Nordby to score the 6th run for the Jets. In the top of the sixth, Newman recorded three outs, only allowing the Golden Suns only one hit. ATU displayed good defense in the bottom of the sixth, getting three straight ground outs. In the final inning, the Golden Suns were able to get two hits, but Westover and the Jets defense were able to hold them off and secure the first win of the season for Newman. 
 
Player Notes:
-Gianna Navarro led the Jets going 3-4, adding a run and batting in 3 runs.
-AJ Borja scored three runs, hit 2-2 and earned 2 walks. 
-Paola Zamacona got the win and added a strikeout.
-Westover recorded the save, facing 10 batters and not allowing any runs. 
 
Vs. Upper Iowa
-The Jets were held scoreless in the top of the first inning. Upper Iowa was the first to score in the bottom of the first inning, with a fielder's choice that allowed a run to score. This score gave the Peacocks an early 1-0 lead. In the top of the second inning, Canez walked to start it off. Then, Tori Waggoner moved Canez to second with a sacrifice. Fairbairn came up to the plate and hit a line drive single to center field that sored Canez and moved Fairbairn to second base. Lopez was able to then reach base on a walk. Borja, the next batter, hit a fly ball and reached first after an error by the Peacocks shortstop. This error allowed Fairbairn to score the Jets second run of the inning and take the lead at 2-1. In the bottom of the second inning, the Jets held the Peacocks scoreless with two fly balls and a ground out. Both teams were held scoreless in the third inning. 
 
-The next score came from the Jets in the top of the sixth inning. With two outs, Nordby singled to center field which hit Fairbairn across the plate, who walked earlier in the inning. This gave the Jets the 3-1 edge. The Peacocks only gave up one run in the top of the inning. Then in the bottom of the sixth inning, the Peacocks were able to tie it up after a two run home run. A few batters later, the Peacocks were able to take the lead from the Jets after a double play scored their fourth run. The Jets were down 4-3 heading into the final inning. Though the Jets had three reach base in the top of the seventh inning, the offense was unable to hit the runners in. The Jets would fall, 4-3. 
 
Player Notes:
- Fairbairn led the Jets with two hits on two at bats, drawing two walks, scoring two runs, and one RBI.
- Nordby added one hit with one RBI. 
 
The Jets return to play on Wednesday against Northwestern Oklahoma State for a double header starting at 2 PM.
