WICHITA- Newman hosted SWOSU for a midweek non-conference matchup that ended with the Bulldogs taking the first game 7-3 and the second game, 5-4.
How it Happened:
Game 1:
The game started with SWOSU hitting three doubles in their first five at bats, leading to an early 2-0 Bulldog lead. Then, Newman responded with two doubles, one from
Hayley Bonython and another from
Gianna Navarro that leveled the score at twos. In the top of the second inning, the Bulldogs were able to score two more runs off of two hits to put the difference back two.
Alex Schreiner got a hit to get the Jets offense started in the bottom of the second.
Hannah Nordby and
Lauren McNaught both singled to left field, loading the bases for Newman and forcing the Bulldogs to change their pitcher. After that,
AJ Borja hit a sacrifice fly out to right field to score Schreiner and cut the difference to one. SWOSU was able to hold the Jets down to only one run in the inning. Southwestern Okla. got two hits in the top of the third but were unable to transform them into runs. Then, the Jets were not able to score a run in the bottom of the third despite having two runners on base.
The Bulldogs scored two runs off of a double and a triple in the top of the fourth inning, forcing the Jets to change the pitcher.
Paola Zamacona entered the field to substitute for Westover. SWOSU hit another double to score their seventh run before retiring the side. Newman was able to load the bases in the bottom of the fourth but a good defensive effort by the Bulldogs denied them from scoring. Zamacona and the Jets defense retired the three batters they faced, bringing the offense back out. The bottom of the fifth and the top of the sixth both went hitless and scoreless. In the bottom of the sixth, Newman got a hit by McNaught with a single to center field, but the Bulldogs recorded three consecutive outs to end the inning. The seventh inning went scoreless despite Newman's attempt for a late comeback, resulting in a final 7-3 score.
Game 2:
Maddie Rae Romo started the second game on the mound for the Jets. She recorded a strikeout and helped the defense record the third out to end the top of the first. The Jets were able to load the bases in the bottom of the first with a hit from
Tori Waggoner and
Reghann Fairbairn and an earned walk from Schreiner, but the Bulldogs displayed a great defensive effort and retired the side. In the top of second, SWOSU got on the scoreboard off of a double and a ground out. Then, in the bottom of the second McNaught was able to reach base on an error but it didn't lead to anything. Romo and the Jets defense held the Bulldogs down to only one hit in the top of the third. Following that, Newman was unable to get on base before the end of the inning.
Romo recorded her third strikeout of the game to start the top of the fourth inning. Then, the Jets infield retired two consecutive batters to bring Newman's bats back out.
Rylee Gresham got a hit in the bottom of the fourth but it didn't lead to anything. The Bulldogs recorded a run off of two consecutive hits to put the score at 2-0.
Lauren McNaught earned a walk in the first Jet at bat of the fifth inning. Two consecutive fielding errors by the Bulldogs helped Newman score their first run of the game while leaving two runners on base. Then, a double play stopped the Jets' comeback. After that, two singles, a double, and an error aided SWOSU into scoring three runs and leading with a 5-1 score.
Paola Zamacona substituted for Romo on the mound and recorded the last two outs of the inning.
Malie Noda got a hit as the lead off batter in the bottom of the sixth but the Bulldogs retired the three following batters to take the game to the seventh inning. Zamacona struck out the first batter and then caught the second batters' hit to start the top of the seventh. Newman recorded the third out and headed to the bottom of the 7th hoping for a comeback.
AJ Borja and
Tori Waggoner got on base with a hit, giving the Jets hope for the comeback.
Gianna Navarro's single scored Borja and left two runners on base with no outs recorded. Fairbairn continued the Jets good momentum with a single to center field that scored both Navarro and Waggoner to put the Jets within one run of the Bulldogs. Despite making a huge effort, the Jets lost the second game 5-4.
