Women’s Basketball gears up to face Emporia State on the road

Last Time Out

The Jets faced Nebraska-Kearney and nationally ranked Fort Hays state on the road, falling to Nebraska-Kearney, 76–42 before dropping to No. 7 Fort Hays State, 99-57. 

Against Nebraksa-Kearney, the Jets and the Lopers went back and forth in the first quarter with points by Paige Craft and Alexis Martin helping the Jets offensively. The Lopers led by two after the first quarter. Nebraska-Kearney began to pull away in the second stretching the margin to 33-21 at the half. The Lopers opened the third quarter with a strong 17-0 run, making the score 57-25. The Jets showed late fight with key buckets from Valeriya Lioukina and a three from Carli Carlson, but the Lopers secured a 76–42 victory.

On Saturday, February 14th the Jets traveled to Hays, Kansas to face the nationally ranked Tigers of Fort Hays State. Valeriya Lioukina and Delainey Wylie helped the Jets get started. Fort Hays would go on multiple scoring runs to take the lead 20-11 after the first quarter. The Tigers would then extend their lead 41-26 at half despite ten first-half points by Lioukina. The Tigers continued to pull away in the third, building a 77–37 advantage behind strong offensive stretches, while Carli Carlson provided a spark with back-to-back threes for Newman. A 13–0 run in the fourth sealed it, and Fort Hays closed out a 99–57 win.

Scouting the Jets 

The Jets enter the week averaging 63.6 points per game while shooting 35.6 percent from the field. The team records an average 36.5 rebounds per game. Jaeden McMillin continues to lead the Jets, averaging 15.6 points per game on 41.6 percent shooting while pulling down a team-best 6.9 rebounds per contest. Martin adds another double-digit scoring option for the Jets at 11.5 points per game and remains the team's top threat from beyond the arc, shooting 35.1 percent from three. Paige Craft leads the Jets with 58 assists this season to help anchor the offense, while contributing 7.7 points per game. Inside, Delainey Wylie has provided a strong defensive presence, recording 35 blocks on the year.


Behind Enemy Lines

Emporia State enters the week with a 13-12 overall record and a 7-9 mark in MIAA play. The Hornets are coming off a split week with a loss to Fort Hays State and a close win against Nebraska-Kearney. The team averages 67.3 points per game and 37.9 rebounds. The Hornets shoot 30.4% from behind the arc and 39.9% in field goal range. Individually, Kaitlyn Sanders leads the team in scoring with 15.6 points per game. Gracie Gilpin leads the team in minutes played while also averaging 12.9 points per contest. Macee Gandee has recorded an impressive 36 blocks on the season and leads the team in rebounds per game with 6.4.
