Wichita, Kan. - Newman University's Katie Hughes has been named the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association's (USTFCCCA) NCAA Division II Women's National Athlete of the Week after a record-breaking performance at the Augustana Invitational on Friday morning.

This is the first time in Newman's history that an athlete was named M-F Athletic National Athlete of the Week in cross country.

Hughes captured the individual title in the women's 6K race, crossing the finish line in 20:16.9 to win by 21.1 seconds over the nearest competitor. Competing against a field representing 20 teams, Hughes' time shattered the previous school record held by and marked one of the most dominant performances in program history.

The national recognition comes after Hughes led the race from start to finish, becoming the top individual finisher while helping the Jets place 17th in the team standings with 484 points.
