Following high school, McVicar went on to the University of South Dakota where she set records in cross country as well as the 3000m and the 10000m in track. The Wichita native secured appearances at the NCAA D1 Cross Country championship two years in a row. On the track it was a total of three appearances at the NCAA D1 West Regional meet. In her junior year, a ticket to Oregon to compete in the 10000m at the NCAA D1 Championship for Track and Field was punched.

While competing and coaching at the University of South Dakota, McVicar earned both her Bachelor's and Master's in Kinesiology and Sports Science.
