Newman has put together three most successful seasons as a member of NCAA Division II over the past three years, as the Jets saw their wrestlers achieve four All-America finishes, culminating in Noel Torres earning the school’s first NCAA championship when he won the 184-pound class in 2018.
Dustin Reed brought home the team’s first NCAA All-American honor by finishing fifth at 125 pounds at the NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships in 2016, and followed that up with a seventh-place finish in 2017. Tyler Mies joined Torres as an All-American in 2018, finishing sixth and helping the Jets to a 12th-place finish at the NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships.
Fisher came to Newman midway through his own collegiate career and immediately became the program’s first NCAA national qualifier when he reached the season’s final tournament in 2009-10. An injury cut short the end of his career the next season, but he stayed in Wichita, working as a student assistant the rest of the year and volunteering in 2011-12 while finishing his bachelor’s degree. He became the team’s assistant the following season.
The Andale, Kansas native finished in the top three at the KSHSAA state tournament in each of his four seasons at Andale High School, winning a pair of state titles along the way.
