WICHITA - The Newman women's soccer team picked up its second Heartland Conference win of the season with a 2-0 win over St. Mary's on a cool Friday evening at Wilkins Field.
The Jets made the first move halfway through the first period when
Heather Baloga's corner kick connected with
Kayde Kluge in front of the net. Kluge put the ball past St. Mary's keeper Mari Edwards and into the back left corner of the goal for the first goal of the game, and gave Newman a 1-0 lead going into the halftime break.
Newman maintained its first half intensity level, and struck again just 15 minutes into the second half when an
Amanda Knabe pass was headed in by
Lauren Wilson for her fourth goal of the season; a close range shot that gave the Jets the 2-0 advantage they would go on to win by.
The Jets put up 18 shots in the game, including a
Mallory Hurst shot in the last 10 minutes that beat Edwards, but skated past the goal, missing my mere inches. St. Mary's put up just six shots in the game.
With the win, the Jets improve to 4-4-2 on the season, and 2-1 in the Heartland Conference, while the Rattlers fall to 1-8-1, and 1-2 in Heartland Conference action. Newman is back in action Sunday when 12th-ranked St. Edwards pays a visit to Wilkins Field for a match beginning at 1 p.m.
