Jets Upset #7 St. Edward's in Austin, 1-0

AUSTIN, Texas - Karina Ortiz's first goal of the season came just in time to upset the conference-leading, and seventh-ranked St. Edward's Hilltoppers in a 1-0 double-overtime thriller Friday evening in Austin, Texas. Ortiz scored with 40 seconds remaining in the second overtime to give the Jets the win.

Newman (7-5-4, 5-2-2) was able to keep the offensive-minded Hilltoppers and their offensive standout Kim Abbott off the board for nearly 110 minutes in Friday night's contest. St. Edward's (13-2-1, 7-1) out-shot the Jets 32-5 over the course of the match, but Newman keeper Christina Farid was able to stand strong, and saved all seven shots that came her way, including a controversial penalty kick in the first overtime by Abbott.

Ortiz entered the game at the 107:52 mark of the match, and paid dividends nearly immediately. Exactly one minute and 28 seconds later, Amanda Knabe's pass found Ortiz on a counter attack. With the end of the match bearing down, Ortiz took a shot, and beat SEU keeper Clair Tilton on the far post for the golden goal to give Newman the win.

With the win, the Jets improve to 7-5-4 on the season, and 5-2-2 in Heartland Conference play. With a firm grip on third place in the conference, the Jets will move on to San Antonio to take on St. Mary's in a 1 p.m. match Sunday afternoon.
