Volleyball Falls at Dallas Baptist, 3-1

DALLAS, Texas - The Newman volleyball team saw it's hopes for a Heartland Conference tournament come up short, dropping a 3-2 (25-22, 23-25, 18-25, 25-15, 15-12) decision to Dallas Baptist Thursday evening at The Burg Center in Dallas, Texas.

Newman (11-20, 6-7) gave Dallas Baptist (17-15, 9-4) everything they wanted in the first set, but nine attack errors proved costly as the hosting Patriots took the first set, 25-22. The Jets countered in the second set to earn a 25-23 win, and seemed to take the competitive momentum with a dominating 25-18 third-set win, but DBU returned the favor with a 25-15 win in the fourth set, then eeked out a 15-1-2 win in the decisive fifth set to claim the match.

Chelsey Potter's 15 kills led the Jets offensively, while freshman Sarah Bailey was close behind with 12 kills. Potter also added 19 digs, second only to libero Amy Shorette's 23 dig outing. Playing as a setter, Caroline Painter added 15 digs to a 40-assist performance.

The Jets loss, combined with Texas-Permian Basin's win over Oklahoma Panhandle State tonight in Odessa, mathematically eliminates the Jets from a possible appearance in the Heartland Conference tournament. Newman will head into Saturday's season finale at UTPB with an 11-20 overall, and a 6-7 mark in Heartland Conference play. First serve at UTPB's Falcon Dome is slated for 2 p.m.
