WICHITA -
Austin Workman defeated the third-ranked junior college wrestler in the nation, but it wasn't enough to lift Newman past No. 11 Pratt Community College, falling 31-9 to the Beavers Wednesday night inside Fugate Gymnasium.
Workman's match was one of few highlights for Newman in the team's first dual match of the season. The junior from Perry, Okla., needed double-overtime before he finally defeated Pratt's Travis Budke in a 6-4 decision in the 165 lb. weight class. Budke entered the night ranked third in the latest National Junior College Athletic Association poll. The Jets' other highlight came in the 133 lb match, where
Trae Treleaven earned Newman's only pin of the night, needing 3:33 to defeat PCC's Todd Fitzgerald in the final match of the evening.
"Our guys didn't perform where I felt like they should have," Head Coach
Ryan Smith said. "I think some guys overlooked their opponents and didn't prepare like they should have. That's taking nothing against Pratt. They're a solid team from top to bottom, but I don't feel like we improved tonight."
The Jets will be back in action this weekend when they travel to Hays, Kan., for the FHSU Open.
