MARYVILLE, Mo.- The Newman women's soccer team opened its season with a 3-1 win over MIAA foe Missouri Western Saturday afternoon at Bearcat Pitch in Maryville, Mo.
The Jets' first goal of the season came on freshman
Lauren Wilson's first collegiate goal just nine minutes into the game. Wilson put a corner kick from
Heather Baloga into the back of the net to give Newman the early 1-0 advantage.
The Griffons needed just six minutes to strike back when an Audrey Henderson goal tied the match at 1-1 at the 16:10 mark of play.
Lacey Alost added another goal for the Jets at the 40:43 mark, converting a pass from
Amanda Knabe into a point for the Jets. The goal broke the 1-1 tie and gave Newman the 2-1 edge going into the halftime break.
The final goal of the match came just four minutes into the second half. Freshman
Mallory Hurst was taken down by MWSU goalkeeper Jenna Weis in the box, and the Jets were awarded a penalty kick. Knabe was able to put the ball past the MWSU wall, and into the net to give the Jets the 3-1 advantage they would go on to win by.
The Jets took just eight shots in the match, compared to 13 from MWSU, but sophomore goalkeeper
Christina Farid held the Griffons to just one goal in her 90 minutes in goal.
Newman is back in action Sunday when they take on Northwest Missouri State at 3:30 p.m. at Bearcat Pitch. NWSU earned a 1-0 double-overtime result against Southwestern Oklahoma State.
