Women's Soccer Ties #21 MSU, 1-1

WICHITA - The Newman Women's Soccer team forced double overtime for the third-straight game in a 1-1 tie with #21 Midwestern State Friday night at Wilkins Field.

Newman hit the field running, and needed just better than eight minutes to net their first goal of the game. Lauren Benning connected with Amanda Knabe on a breakaway, and Knabe beat MSU's Ashley Meek one-on-one for the first goal of the game to give the Jets the 1-0 edge.

The Jets held that advantage through the rest of the first half, and kept the visiting Mustangs off the board for the majority of the second half, but Midwestern State began playing with a sense of urgency late in the match. A would-be goal Mustang equalizer at the 6:33 mark was called back on an offisdes penalty, but that was all the motivation MSU needed. Four minutes later, the Mustangs got their equalizer when Brandy O'Neal put Kari Bristow's foul kick into the net from nearly point-blank range, tying the game at 1-1 with 2:11 to play.

It was a dead heat in the two overtime periods. Midwestern State controlled the ball for a majority of the extra frames, but were only able to out-shoot the Jets 3-2. When the final horn sounded, the two teams had combined for 30 shots and 12 saves.

With the loss, the Jets fall to 1-2-2 on the season. They are back in action Sunday when they travel to Edmond, Okla., to face their third Lone Star Conference opponent in four games when they take on Central Oklahoma in a 2 p.m. contest.
