St. Edward's Tops Jets, 3-2

WICHITA - Chelsey Potter notched her third double-double of the season as St. Edward's snuck past Newman in five sets, 3-2, Thursday night inside Fugate Gymnasium.

Newman held leads late into each of the first four sets, and led 4-1 in the fifth set before the Hilltoppers rallied to take the match. The Jets hit .293 in the opening frame and cruised to a 25-20 opening set win. St. Edward's rallied back for 25-23 wins in both the second and third sets, before Newman posted their best team hitting percentage of the evening, hitting .343 on the way to a 25-17 win to force the decisive fifth set.

The Jets jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the fifth set, but the Hilltoppers stormed back, taking advantage of six Newman attack errors on their way to the 15-8 win that gave them the match.

Potter's 16-kill, 13-dig double-double led Newman offensively. The junior recorded season-high numbers in both kills (16), and hitting percentage (.469), and was one of four Jets to finish with 10 or more kills in the match. Freshman Sarah Bailey finished with a career-high 13 kills, while fellow freshman Jeana Farruggia and senior Angie Bennett finished with 10 kills each. Caroline Painter tied her career assists number, finishing with 52 assists for the third time, while Amy Shorette fell one dig short of her career high, finishing with 15 digs in the match.

With the loss, the Jets fall to 3-9 on the season, and 0-2 in Heartland Conference play. They will look to right the ship Saturday when they host Texas A&M International at 2 p.m. inside Newman's Fugate Gymnasium.
