WICHITA -
Angie Bennett's season-high 14 kills wasn't enough to lift Newman past Rockhurst as the Jets fell 3-1 to the Hawks Tuesday night at Fugate Gymnasium.
Out for revenge from an early-season loss to Newman, the Hawks came out blazing in the first set, hitting a .406 clip on their way to a 25-14 first-set win. The Jets fought back in the second set, overcoming a .162 hitting percentage to steal a 25-21 win, but the Hawks took flight in the final two sets, winning by identical 25-18 margins, and riding Maggie McGovern's 21 kills to the 3-1 win.
Bennett posted a season-high 14 kills to lead the Jets' offensive attack, while freshmen
Jeana Farruggia and
Sarah Bailey each finished with 11 kills, tying a career high for Farruggia.
Chelsey Potter led the Jets defensively, digging up 19 balls, while libero
Amy Shorette added 13 digs.
Caroline Painter's 25 assists was also a team high.
With the loss, the Jets fall to 4-10 on the season. They will look to regroup quickly, as Fort Hays State will pay a visit to Fugate Gymnasium Wednesday night for a 7 p.m. match.
