Jets, SWOSU Battle to 1-1 Tie

WICHITA - Two early goals led to a stale mate as Newman battled Southwestern Oklahoma State to a 1-1 tie Friday evening under the lights at Wilkins Field.

The game got off to a quick start. Newman needed just better than six minutes to post its first goal of the game when Freshman Mallory Hurst's shot from 15 yards out soared past SWOSU keeper Katie Mahoney and into the back corner of the net to give the Jets an early 1-0 lead. Fellow freshman Emily Arden was credited with the assist after setting Hurst up for the goal. The Bulldogs bit back just over four minutes later when Samantha Dobson's pass found Korey Hearn, who headed the ball into the net to tie the match at 1-1.

Those would end up being the only goals scored in the game, which ended in a 1-1 tie. The Jets had four shots in the overtime period, and held SWOSU to just one, but Mahoney held strong. As a team, Newman outshot the Bulldogs 21-7.

The tie moves Newman's record to 1-1-1. They are back in action Sunday as they host in-state MIAA foe Washburn in a 7 p.m. match at Wilkins Field.
