Jets Open Tournament with Split

MARYVILLE, Mo. - The Newman volleyball team split its opening round matches at the Comfort INNvitational, which began Friday at Bearcat Arena in Maryville, Mo. The Jets swept Quincy, but dropped a 3-0 decision to the hosts from Northwest Missouri State on the Bearcats' home court.

The Jets (3-2) took advantage of 18 Quincy (1-4) attack errors, and held off the Hawks for a 26-24, 25-23, 25-19 win to open their tournament play. Newman hit a season-high .321 percent in the match, while Quincy hit at a .235 clip. Lauren Poe led the Jets with nine kills while Chelsey Potter and Angie Bennett added eight kills a piece. Amy Shorette led all defensive players with 12 digs in the match. Potter, Poe and Lindsay Esquibel each added eight digs of their own in the winning effort.

Northwest Missouri State 3, Newman 0
Freshman Brittany Krantwashl's eight kills, a season high, weren't enough to power the Jets past the hosting Northwest Missouri State Bearcats. NWMSU held Newman to a .121 hitting percentage in the Jets' three set, 25-22, 25-16, 25-22 loss. Amy Shorette led the Jets on the defensive side of the net, posting six digs, while Caroline Painter finished with 22 assists.

The Jets are back in action Saturday when they take on Lone Star Conference foe Texas A&M-Commerce in a 10 a.m. matchup before taking the court opposite Minnesota State-Moorhead at 4:45 to conclude the tournament.
