WICHITA - Two late goals lifted the St. Edward's Hilltoppers past the Newman women's soccer team, 3-1, Saturday afternoon at Wilkins Field.
Celia Myers netted her second goal of the season as the Jets' only goal scorer.
Newman (4-5, 0-1 HC) wasted little time putting pressure on the Hilltoppers as
Celia Myers needed just 25 seconds to send a cross-pass from
Yvette Alvarez past SEU keeper Troi Jorgensen from 10 yards out to give the Jets an early 1-0 lead.
St. Edward's (8-0-1, 1-0 HC) got on the board at the 10:44 mark, as Ashley Villm headed a goal off a Bethany Bennett corner kick, to tie the match at 1-1.
Both teams entered halftime tied with five shots, but Newman had the upper hand with four shots on goal.
The game stayed even until SEU's Janae Averett beat Newman keeper
Christina Farid from 18 yards out, from a Jordan Ynostrosa assist at the 63:31 mark, to give the Hilltoppers a 2-1 advantage.
St. Edward's added an insurance goal in the 72nd minute, as Rachel Murray used a cross-pass from Bethany Bennett to net a short range goal that gave the Hilltoppers the 3-1 edge they went on to win by.
St. Edward's out shot Newman 14-5, and took the corner kicks battle 14-2.
With the loss, the Jets drop to 4-5 overall and 0-1 in the Heartland Conference. The Jets return to action Oct. 7, when they travel to Texas A&M International, for a 7 p.m. match.
