WICHITA - The St. Mary's Rattlers were able to overcome double-double efforts from Newman seniors Chelsey Potter and Ashley Myers, as the Rattlers struck the Jets for a 3-2 (21-25, 25-18, 25-19, 23-25, 15-11) win Thursday evening inside Fugate Gymnasium. Potter finished with a team-high 16 kills and 13 digs, while Myers added 37 assists and 11 digs in the loss.

Newman (10-14, 5-4 Heartland) took the early advantage, forcing 10 St. Mary's (11-13, 5-4 Heartland) first-set attack errors and picked up a 25-21 win to open the match. The Rattlers struck back in the second set, forcing nine Newman attack errors, and limiting the Jets to a .044 hitting percentage. Their 25-18 win in the second set tied the match at 1-1. St. Mary's kept rolling in the third set, posting 15 kills on 35 attempts, and limiting the Jets to just 10 kills on 30 attempts as the Rattlers took a 2-1 lead in the match with a 25-19 third-set win.

The Jets wouldn't go quietly in Thursday's match. Newman forced nine St. Mary's attack errors and a handful of Rattler setting errors, but held off a late Rattler rally to force the fifth set with a 25-23 win.

Thursday's final set belonged to St. Mary's from the outset. The Rattlers sprinted to a 4-0 lead, only to watch the Jets string together four-straight points, but that was where the drama ended. Newman struggled to stay within three points of the Rattlers from that point on, as St. Mary's avenged their home-court loss to Newman earlier this season with a three-set win in Wichita.

Chelsey Potter led the Jets offensively with 16 kills, while Victoria Green added 13 kills behind a team-high .357 hitting percentage. Ashley Myers assisted 37 of Newman's 46 kills in the match, while Amanda Savage led the Newman defense with 20 digs, and was one of four Jets to finish with 10-or-more digs.

With the loss, the Jets fall to 10-14 on the season, and 5-4 in Heartland Conference play. They will return to action Saturday as they welcome Texas A&M International to Fugate Gymnasium for a noon contest.
