Rattlers Nip Jets in Overtime, 1-0

WICHITA - The Newman women's soccer team out-shot St. Mary's 23-9, but the Rattlers got the shot that counted, handing the Jets a 1-0 overtime loss Thursday evening at Wilkins Field.

Newman (7-8, 3-4 Heartland) controlled nearly every major statistical category in Thursday's match. The Jets out-shot St. Mary's (9-6-1, 6-3 Heartland) 8-4 in the opening half, and added a 14-4 shot count in the second period, but neither keeper budged in the first 90 minutes of play, and forced the match into overtime.

The Jets were dealt a blow in the third minute of overtime, when freshman Celia Myers was red-carded after a brief altercation with St. Mary's' Carolyn Martin, leaving the Jets short-handed for the remainder of the game. Five minutes later, the Rattlers were given the opportunity they needed. Ashlyn Leighton broke away from the Newman defense, and beat Newman keeper Christina Farid one-on-one from 10 yards out for the game-winner.

Sade Humphrey posted six shots in Thursday's loss to lead all shooters. Farid finished with four saves, while St. Mary's keeper Felicia Lombardo saved all six Newman shots.

With the loss, the Jets fall to 7-8 on the season, and 3-4 in Heartland Conference play. They will return to action Saturday, hosting Texas A&M International in a 1 p.m. contest at Wilkins Field.
