WICHITA – Yvette Alvarez scored her first goal of the season, and led the Newman University women's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Texas A&M International Saturday afternoon at Wilkins Field. The win was Newman's fifth shutout of the season.
Newman (8-8, 4-4 Heartland) controlled the first half of the match, out-shooting Texas A&M International (4-11, 1-8 Heartland) 10-2. Dustdevil keeper Sasha Scott was solid, turning away seven shots, but made one mistake that ultimately cost her team the game.
With five minutes left in the first half,
Sade Humphrey placed a cross-pass to
Yvette Alvarez, who shot the ball past Scott to score the first and only goal of the game. Newman keeper
Christina Farid saved all three shots that came her way to secure the Jets' 1-0 win.
The Jets out-shot TAMIU 15-6.
With the win, the Jets improve to 8-8 overall and 4-4 in Heartland Conference play. They will return to action Tuesday, hosting Texas-Permian Basin in a 4 p.m contest at Wilkins Field.
