Jets Clinch No. 2 Seed with Sweep of OPSU

Chelsey Potter Posted 13 kills in Newman's sweep of OPSU
WICHITA - Senior Chelsey Potter ended her Newman regular season career with an exclamation point, posting 13 kills and hitting .684 as the Jets earned a sweep of Oklahoma Panhandle State Saturday afternoon inside Fugate Gymnasium. Newman's win, combined with a Dallas Baptist loss, secured the No. 2 seed for the Jets in next week's Heartland Conference Championship tournament.

Saturday's match was never in doubt for the Jets. Newman (14-15, 8-4 Heartland) held off Oklahoma Panhandle State (6-25, 2-10 Heartland) for a 25-18 win in the opening set. The 1-0 deficit in the match took the wind out of the Aggies' sails. Newman limited OPSU to just six kills in second and third sets, while the Jets hit .542 and .667 in the second and third sets, en route to 25-12 and 25-10 wins, respectively.

Five seniors were honored by their teammates and coaching staff following Saturday's win. Chelsey Potter ended her final regular season as a Jet with a team-high 13 kills, and added seven digs, three aces, two assists, and a block, while Victoria Green finished with an error-free seven kills and one dig. Senior Ashley Myers played two sets in the match and closed her final home game with 12 assists, three digs, and an ace, while Allison Fox posted seven digs and two assists in her final regular season contest. Student assistant coach Amy Steven was also honored for her contributions to the coaching staff.

With the win, Newman ends the regular season with a 14-15 mark, and an 8-4 mark in conference play. The Jets have earned the No. 2 seed in next week's Heartland Conference Championship tournament in Austin, Texas, and will face the third-seeded St. Mary's Rattlers. A complete bracket is expected to be annnounced early next week.
