Jets Fall at Missouri Western, 65-57

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - Junior forward Tasha Cannon posted her second-consecutive double-double, but 21 turnovers cost the Newman women's basketball team in a 65-57 loss to Missouri Western Thursday inside the MWSU Fieldhouse in St. Joseph, Mo. Cannon finished with 16 points and 14 rebounds in the loss.

Missouri Western (6-3) forced turnovers on two of Newman's first three possessions, and jumped out to an early 5-0 lead just over a minute into the game. Bobbi Coleman put the Jets on the board with a jumper at the 18:14 mark as part of a 4-0 Newman (8-5) spurt, but the Griffons countered with five-straight points to push their lead to 10-4 with 15:32 still to play. Newman trailed by at least four points for the next four minutes until a Coleman trey pulled the Jets to within one, 14-13, with 11:26 left on the clock. Coleman's three was part of a 9-0 Newman run, capped by a Nikita Norwood trey that gave the visiting Jets a 17-14 lead with 9:24 remaining in the opening half. The two teams exchanged baskets for the next five minutes until a Rachel Luteyn jumper gave the Griffons a lead they would not give up for the remainder of the first half. After 20 minutes, Missouri Western held a 29-26 lead.

Newman opened the second half with a 5-2 spurt, and tied the game at 31-31 after a Rhea Codio trey at the 18:20 mark of the second half, but a Kallie Schoonover trey on the following Griffon possesson sparked a 10-2 run that allowed Missouri Western to build a 41-33 lead with 15:29 remaining in the game. The Jets responded with a 9-4 run, capped by an Alex Adekunle free throw that pulled Newman to within three, 45-42, at the 12:29 mark, but MWSU scored the next five points of the game to push their lead back to eight. The Griffons held a lead of at least six until the 3:57 mark when another Codio trey narrowed the Griffon lead to five, 56-51, but that was as close as Newman could get for the remainder of the game, as Missouri Western picked up the 65-57 win.

Tasha Cannon posted her second-straight double-double, and her fifth double-double of the season, finishing with 16 points and 14 rebounds off the bench, while Bobbi Coleman added 11 points in her first start since Nov. 23. Newman shot 36.8 percent (21-57) from the field, and out-rebounded the Griffons 52-29, but Missouri Western forced 21 turnovers, while committing just six.

Jessica Koch led the Griffons with 17 points.

With the loss, Newman falls to 8-5 on the season. They will return to action Monday, traveling to Wichita Falls, Texas, to take on the Midwestern State Mustangs. Tip-time is slated for 6 p.m. inside MSU's D. L. Ligon Coliseum.
