Women's Soccer Blasts Friends, 3-0

WICHITA - The Newman women's soccer team snapped a four-match losing streak with a 3-0 win over former NAIA arch-rival Friends University Wednesday afternoon at Adair-Austin Stadium in Wichita. Three different Jets scored goals in the win.

Newman (3-4) established itself as the aggressor early on in the match. The Jets shot early and often on the way to their most lopsided win of the season. Newman shredded the Friends (1-4) defense, and found their way to Falcon keeper Ashley Simon 16 times, three of which resulted in Newman goals.

Sade Humphrey opened the scoring for the Jets near the half-way mark of the first half. The junior caught up to a pass from Lauren Wilson, and sent it past a charging Simon for the first goal of the match.

Just over 18 minutes later, Alli Zingo sent a pass from Lauren Benning past Simon from 20 yards out to give Newman its first 2-0 lead of the season. Newman held that same 2-0 lead until halftime.

Realizing that the win was likely in hand, Newman head coach Derek Nichols made sure nearly everybody on his team saw playing time through the second half. Before it was finished, 19 different Jets made apeparances on the field.

Freshmen Alison Petrillose hammered the final nail into the Friends coffin in the 73rd, scoring her first collegiate goal on a laser shot from nearly 30 yards out. Her shot struck the cross bar, but took a Newman bounce into the goal to give the Jets the 3-0 edge they went on to win by.

Humphrey finished as Newman's leading shot-taker in the match, finishing with six shots, 14 of which were on goal. As a team, the Jets out-shot the Falcons 23-2.

With the win, the Jets improve to 3-4 on the season. They will return to action Monday, hosting Ottawa in a 7 p.m. contest at Wilkins Field.
