Late Goal Lifts Jets Past Bearcats, 1-0

Sade Humphrey's 109th-minute goal gave the Jets their first ever win over Northwest Missouri State Friday night .

BOX SCORE

WICHITA - Sade Humphrey's debut as a Newman Jet was one to remember. The junior transfer from Butler Community College was in the right place at the right time Friday night, and netted the game-winning goal with 41 seconds left in double overtime to give Newman a 1-0 win over Northwest Missouri State in the Jets' season opener at Wilkins Field.

The Bearcats and the Jets appeared to be evenly-matched throughout the game. Newman (1-0) out-shot Northwest Missouri State (0-1) 6-3 in the opening period, and Northwest keeper Kelsey Adams turned away the only shot that came her way in the opening 45 minutes. That shot came from Newman freshman Alison Petrillose in the 24th minute.

Northwest turned up the pressure in the second half, out-shooting Newman 6-5, and forcing Newman keeper Christina Farid to save five shots on goal, but Farid was up to the challenge, and kept the Bearcats off the board for 90 minutes of regulation.

The Jets had their best scoring chance of the game seven minutes into the first overtime period. A Celia Myers shot on goal was saved by Adams, and deflected out to Lauren Wilson directly in front of the net, but Wilson's shot sailed just high and the game remained scoreless. The Bearcats responded a minute later with a header attempt from Amanda Olah, who was denied by Farid for the only save of the first overtime period.

The Bearcats appeared to be the aggressors out of the gates in the first overtime period, firing two shots within a minute of each other in the middle of the period. Lauren Wilson had another opportunity on the Newman end in the 107th minute, but again her shot sailed over the crossbar. In the final minute of the game, Newman's Amanda Knabe dribbled the ball nearly half the field before feeding Humphrey, who pulled Adams out of position and dribbled a shot past her from short range on the left side and into the right front corner of the net to give the Jets the 1-0 advantage.

Humphrey was Newman's leading shot-taker in Friday's contest, taking four shots in the game, but her only shot on goal was the one that won the game for Newman. Wilson added three shots in the win, while Lauren Benning, Celia Myers, and Lacey Alost each took two shots. As a team, Newman out-shot Northwest 15-12.

Farid finished with six saves for the Jets, while Adams finished with two saves for the Bearcats.

With the win, the Jets improve to 1-0-0 on the season, while Northwest Missouri State falls to 0-1-0. Newman is back in action Sunday, traveling to Joplin, Mo., for a date with the Missouri Southern Lions. Kick-off at MSSU's Hal Bodon Field is slated for 2 p.m.
