Box Score LAREDO, Texas - A pair of early goals in each half proved too much to overcome as the Newman women's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to Texas A&M International Sunday afternoon in Laredo, Texas. The loss was Newman's first-ever loss to the Dustdevils.
-The start of the match was delayed nearly two hours after miscommunication from TAMIU concerning the actual game time. Newman's coaching staff had not been informed of the change, and arrived in time for a 1 p.m. start time, which is the standard weekend start time in the Heartland Conference. As such, replecement officials were called in to conduct the game.
-When the match finally did start, the Dustdevils struck quickly. Newman's
Tori Hostick was whistled for committing a foul outside the box.
Hostick was issued a yellow card, and, despite the foul being committed outside the box, TAMIU's Shelby Williams was awarded a penalty kick, which was converted to give TAMIU a 1-0 lead just five minutes into the game.
-Williams received another free chance five minutes into the second half, this time using a free kick opportunity to score her second goal of the game. The goal gave the Dustdevils a 2-0 lead with just better than 40 minutes remaining.
-Newman scored its only goal of the game in the 64th minute, when
Bianca Torres passed a ball to
Lauren Benning, who curled a shot inside the left post from 15 yards out to pull the Jets to within one, 2-1, with just over 25 minutes remaining.
-Newman out-shot TAMIU 9-5 in the contest, but only put four shots on goal. All five TAMIU shots were on-target.
-Each keeper recorded three saves in the contest. Newman keeper
Christina Farid made one save in the first half and two more in the second half while falling to 3-4-3 on the season.
-Five cards were issued in the match. Newman was dealt four yellow cards while TAMIU's lone card was a red card in the 49th minute.
Hostick,
Sarenity Gomez,
Alison Petrillose and
Kayla Strong all received yellow cards in the match.
-Newman was whistled for 12 fouls in the match, eight of which came in the second half. TAMIU was tagged with 10 fouls, and committed just two fouls in the second period.
-TAMIU received four corner kick opportunities in the match, while Newman went the entire 90 minutes without a corner opportunity.
With the loss, the Jets fall to 3-4-3 on the season, and 1-3-1 in Heartland Conference play. Newman will return to action Thursday, hosting Northeastern State in a 4 p.m. contest at Wilkins Field.
