Battle of the Unbeatens to Take Place in Hays

HAYS, Kan, - The Newman men's basketball team looks to continue its hot start to the 2011-12 season, when they travel to Hays to take on fellow unbeaten Fort Hays State. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. inside Gross Memorial Coliseum, and the game will be broadcast live in Wichita on KGSO - 1410 AM. Jimmy Chavez and Bernie Pearson will have the call.

Meet the Jets...
Newman's fast start wouldn't be possible without a complete team effort. The Jets are out-scoring their opposition by nearly 18 points a game, holding opponents to just over 53 points per contest. Newman is holding opponents to a 35 percent field goal percentage, and locking down the perimeter holding them to 13 percent shooting from behind the arc.

Three Jets are averaging double figures in points, highlighted by Eric Saunders 12 point-per-game average. Connor Walker and Darrell Traylor are both averaging 10 points per game. Newman is averaging 16.7 assists per outing, led by Eric Saunders five assists per contest. Chuck Coley is the team's leader in rebounds, averaging eight per outing, to go along with an eight point-per-game scoring average.

Last Time Out...
The Jets improved to 3-0 on the season, with their second victory over Missouri S&T, 83-53 on Saturday in Rolla, Mo. Newman connected on 16 three-pointers, as Eric Saunders tied a career-high with 23 points, shooting seven-for-15 on the night.

Darrell Traylor joined Saunders in double figures, contributing 11 points on four-for-five shooting, including three triples. Mason Felter and Ryan Mesh lead Newman in rebounds with seven a piece.

Newman started the game on a 14-4 run, as the Miners didn't score their first field goal until the 13:09 mark of the first half. As a team, Newman shot 43.5 percent from the floor, and 47.1 percent from long-range. Seven different Jets hit threes on the night.

Scouting Fort Hays State...
Fort Hays State will look to stay unbeaten Tuesday, after defeating Central Christian 76-52 on November 18th. The Tigers are lead by Karron McKenzie, who is averaging 13.3 points per game on the year. McKenzie is joined in double-figures by Tyrone Phillips, who is also contributing 13 points per game. Matt Simmons will look to control the glass, as he is leading Fort Hays State with nearly 15 rebounds per contest. 


A Lopsided Series...
Tuesday night will be the 39th meeting between the Jets and the Tigers, and the 20th meeting in Hays. FHSU holds a 31-8 lead in the all-time series after an 84-71 win over the Jets last season in Wichita. The Tigers are 18-2 all-time against Newman when playing on their home court. Newman's last win over FHSU came in the 1981-82 season when the Jets notched a 61-58 win over the Tigers in Wichita. The Jets' last win in Hays came that same season in the form of a 75-69 win.
