TOPEKA, Kan, - The Newman men's basketball team looks to rebound from its first loss of the 2011-12 season, when they travel to Topeka to take on the Washburn University Ichabods. Tip-off is slated for 1 p.m., at Lee Arena, and the game will be broadcast live in Topeka on WIBW 580 AM.
Meet the Jets...
Newman's fast start wouldn't be possible without a complete team effort. The Jets are out-scoring their opposition by nearly 11 points a game, holding opponents to just over 58 points per contest. Newman is holding opponents to a 38 percent field goal percentage, and locking down the perimeter holding them to 20 percent shooting from behind the arc.
Three Jets are averaging double figures in points, highlighted by Eric Saunders 13 point-per-game average. Chuck Coley joins Saunders in double figures, averaging 10.5 points per game. Newman is averaging 14.8 assists per outing, led by Eric Saunders' 4.5 assists per contest. Chuck Coley is the team's leader in rebounds, averaging seven per outing.
Last Time Out...
Fort Hays State put a blemish on Newman's perfect season, handing them their first loss of the year, 75-65. The Jets battled back after trailing by as many as 18 points during the first half. Newman cut the lead down to six after a Ryan McCarthy three-pointer with 4:22 left in regulation. Ultimately, fouls would be to costly as the Jets put FHSU on the free-throw stripe 12 times during the second half. Newman's full-court press proved valuable as they forced 24 turnovers during the game. Chuck Coley led all scorers with 18 points, while Eric Saunders chipped in with 17 points for the night.
Scouting Washburn...
Washburn is coming off of a 97-72 victory over Peru State on November 22. Will McNeill paced the Ichabods in scoring with 21 points, and Bobby Chipman was strong on the boards with eight rebounds on the night. The Ichabods are led by Will McNeill who is averaging 20 points per game, and is also leading the team in rebounds, averaging 6.4 rebounds per contest. Martin Mitchell joins McNeill in double-figures, averaging 12points per game. Bobby Chipman is second on the squad in rebounds, averaging 6.2 rebounds per contest.
Renewing a Rivalry... Friday's meeting marks the first time since the 2005-06 season that Newman has played Washburn. The Ichabods own a 17-5 record all-time against the Jets. The last time Newman defeated Washburn was during the 1980-81 season, when the Jets defeated the Ichabods 79-72 in Topeka. Since then, Washburn has reeled off 14 straight victories over Newman.
