Box Score WICHITA - In the sixth game of the season, the Newman's men's basketball team dictated the Lincoln Blue Tigers in a 67-56 decision inside Fugate gymnasium. Jimmy Payton led all scorers with 19 points.
Newman took the first basket of the game when Senior
Chuck Coley slam-dunked one at the 18:47 mark.
Connor Walker made the first three point basket of the night at the 16:05 mark of the first half, strengthening the Newman lead to 10-4. Lincoln fought their way back after a two-point basket from Jason Williams, cutting the Jets lead to three at the 14:18 mark. The Jets took their biggest lead of the first half when
Bobby Wesley stole the ball at the 7:00 mark, leading to a basket by
Eric Saunders for a 29-14 lead. Lincoln fought back, making a total of 10 points in the last five minutes of the half to give Newman a 29-24 lead at the half.
The Blue Tigers started the second half with a bang, making consecutive three-point baskets to take their first lead of the night at the 17:00 mark. The score was tied at 35 all in the 16:11 mark of the second half. Freshman
Ryan McCarthy made a three pointer at the 15:13 mark to give the Jets a 42-35 advantage. Lincoln continued to fight back with free throws and layups, cutting the Jet lead to two at the 9:33 mark. The Jets weren't done yet though. With three minutes remaining, Newman scored five points within a minute to take a 63-51lead. Lincoln made the last basket of the night at the 27 second mark to make the final score 67-56 in favor of Newman.
Darrell Traylor scored 13 points with a two-for-two effort from behind the arc. Junior
Bobby Wesley led the Jets with nine rebounds. Wesley and Traylor both finished with three steals. As a team, Newman shot .391 from the field (25-634) and hit 13 of its 19 free throw attempts. Newman carded 46 rebounds while Lincoln had 37.
Jimmy Payton was high scorer for Lincoln with 19 points.
With the win, the Jets go to 4-2 on their season. They will return to action this Saturday at 4 p.m. in Ada, Oklahoma as they take on the East Central Tigers.
