GOODWELL, Okla.- The Newman men's basketball team started off fast, opening up huge leads en-route to its sixth-straight victory in an 88-55 thrashing at Oklahoma Panhandle State on Monday in Goodwell, Okla. Shamar Acuay led all scorers with 16 points.
It didn't take long for Newman (15-4, 7-0 Heartland) to make its prescence felt. Mason Felter connected on two lay-ups in the first minute of action to help post an 8-2 lead with 17:31 left in the half. Oklahoma Panhandle State (3-14, 0-5 Heartland) fought back early, cutting the Jet lead to 8-4 after a D'Ron Walker lay-up with 16:55 remaining. A pair of Chuck Coley free-throws ignited a 12-3 run, expaning the Newman lead to 20-7 with 12:03 left in the half. Jared Messer ended the run with a tip-in at the 8:52 mark, but an Eric Saunders' three-pointer sparked a 22-4 run burning 11 minutes off of the clock, and giving the Jets a 29-9 lead with 9:04 left in the half. Both teams ended the half matching one another shot for shot, and the Jets took a 45-21 lead into the locker room.
The Jets and Aggies started the second-half of play trading off baskets, before an Eric Saunders three-pointer extended the Newman lead to 52-25 with 17:23 left in the game. A Shamar Acuay jumper extended the Jets lead to 65-32 at the 12:56 mark, as OPSU never found an answer for Newman. Luke Barnwell gave the Jets their biggest lead of the night with a lay-up at the 4:29 mark. The majority of the Jets starters made their exit mid-way through the second-half, giving the bench some valuable playing time.
As a team, Newman shot a season-high 66 percent (33-50) from the field, while connecting on 55 percent (11-20) of its three-point attempts. The Jets had five scorers in double-figures.(Acuay, Walker, McCarthy, Saunders, Felter) Newman out-rebounded the Aggies 27-23, holding OPSU to 40.7 percent (22-54) from the field, and 22.2 percent (4-18) from downtown.
